Head Teacher’s Blog – Various good news stories

It has been a really busy time over the last few weeks.  In addition to the on-going day to day work in classes the Christmas festivities have cranked up.

There have been some very positive events which have occurred over the last couple of weeks.  I would like to highlight some of them for you.

Laura Smith – S6 – Young Ambassador for Inclusion

Laura, who is visually impaired, has been chosen to be Renfrewshire’s Young Ambassador for Inclusion.  So far this has involved Laura meeting with other ambassadors and also speaking at an inclusion conference.  I was approached a couple of weeks ago and was asked for quotes from Laura and me to be included in an article to be published by Education Scotland.  The article is entitled “Inspiring pupil from Renfrewshire chosen as Young Ambassador for inclusion” and can be found by putting the article title in to your browser bar.

S1 and 2 reading challenges and Waterstone’s visit

Our school librarians are always keen to encourage our pupils to read more and also more widely.  Our S1 and 2 pupils have been given the opportunity to undertake different challenges this session.  S1 do the Read for Gold challenge where they have to read a total of 15 books and S2 undertake the genre challenge where they have to read 8 books of differing genres.  Between the two year groups, 30 pupils completed the challenge.  As a reward pupils went on a trip to Waterstones and had the chance to help choose new books for our library.  Many thanks to Mrs Gordon for  supporting our pupils and also for organising the trip.  A further ten pupils will visit Waterstones in the new year.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

A few weeks ago I highlighted that we had held an awards ceremony for pupils who had successfully completed their Bronze or Silver Awards.  Last week I was asked to present six pupils with their certificates and badges as they have now successfully completed their awards.  The photo below shows Megan Douglas, Lucy Smith and Louisa Murray who all achieved Bronze and Craig Melrose, Eve Mitchell and Lewis Rodger who all gained Silver.  Congratulations to each of them for this excellent achievement.

Dances

Unfortunately we had to cancel our S3/4 dance due to poor ticket sales.  Our S1/2 dance took place last night and was a great success with some S3 and 4 pupils also attending.  The senior (S5/6) dance took place last Thursday in the Erskine Bridge Hotel.  The vast majority of our pupils behaved impeccably and had a great night.  Unfortunately though some pupils turned up at the dance having consumed some alcohol and had to be sent home.  This was most unfortunate and we are now considering the future of the senior dance.

And finally……Merry Christmas and happy holidays from Santa, the snowman and me!
