Championing Languages Event

S3 language learners welcomed industry speakers representing the hospitality, catering, travel and tourism, science and engineering sectors to Park Mains High School on Friday, 4th November. Pupils heard from The Broadcroft Hotel’s Executive Chef, Virgin Atlantic cabin crew, a Scottish Tourist Guide, a customer experience supervisor from Glasgow Science Centre, Novotel and Ibis Glasgow’s General Manager, Operations Manager and Reservations Team Leader and former pupil Mhairi Grant speaking on behalf of Sun Chemical.   Speakers shared their experiences of learning languages and highlighted the advantages and positive impacts that being able to speak different languages has on their various careers.

80% of pupils reported that their knowledge and understanding of how languages are used in different careers has improved and pupil feedback comments reflect this:

“I didn’t realise so many companies want people who can speak different languages.”

“I learned that there are so many different ways to communicate with languages.”

“I didn’t know I could do all those jobs with languages.”

“I liked that there were very skilled people that knew a lot of languages.”

“I didn’t realise how much languages can help in a wide range of careers.”

The Modern Languages Department would like to thank S5 photographers and S6 for their help in ensuring the smooth running of the event.
