Let’s Read 2019

As part of the school’s commitment to promoting literacy, the English Department will be running a reading competition called Let’s Read 2019! for all S1 pupils from 7th October until 29th November. All participants will receive certificates and may even win prizes at the end of the competition. The aim of Let’s Read is to get pupils and their families reading as many books, from as many different genres, as possible. The pupils will record their reading progress in a journal that they will submit to their English teacher at the end of this period. A key element of Let’s Read is that pupils can also include books that members of their families are reading in their journal. We hope that that this provides opportunities for your family to have important conversations about the pleasures of reading and books at home.

The importance of reading

Children who read books often at age 10 and more than once a week at age 16 gain higher results in maths, vocabulary and spelling tests at age 16 than those who read less regularly.                                                                                                      Source: The Reading Agency

What you can do

Your support will help make this competition successful and we ask that you regularly ask your child what they are reading and discuss the progress they are making with their journal.

Thank you very much in advance for your support!
