Engineering Technician

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Modern Apprentice Technician to work as part of a small team supporting research and development activities within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The main duties of the post will be the manufacture and assembly of components using a varied range of machine tools including CNC milling machines, lathes, surface grinders etc, and a variety of hand tools and measuring equipment i.e. files, drills, micrometers and vernier gauges etc. You will be required along with other co-workers to liaise with academic staff and students and offer advice on manufacturing feasibility.

You will have a minimum of 4 Nat 5’s at Level A, B, or C which should include English, Maths and Science subject and have good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.

What might a typical day in this job look like?

You will work with the qualified technical team on general engineering practices within the workshop. You will use manual and CNC machinery to produce parts for use by students in workshop activities.
After a suitable period of training the MA candidate will be expected to make a progressive contribution to the provision of high levels of customer support in the technical functions to our UG/PG and PGR activities.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to use all workshop equipment ensuring safe working practices are demonstrated. You will learn how to read and produce engineering drawing and how to work from these. You will also learn how to design and produce components to meet the precise standards required by the workshop
Overall you will develop a good range of engineering skills and an understanding of the principles of engineering in a unique environment.
