Head Teacher’s blog – Maths! Maths! Maths!

Mr Campbell of our Mathematics department, who is also Project Leader for Numeracy, recently encouraged pupils to become involved in a number of Mathematics / numeracy events.

Senior Maths Challenge 2015:

Congratulations to Charlotte McCrone and Liam Oldrey who (voluntarily!) participated in the Senior Maths Challenge gaining very respectable Silver award.  This put them in the top 30% of the 82 000 pupils taking part this year across the UK.  This is an excellent achievement for both pupils.

Ada Lovelace Commemoration Event on Wednesday 16th December at the University of the West of Scotland.

This event is held to inspire young women to be motivated to consider a career in areas of technology and engineering.  A group of 13 PMHS pupils from across S1-S6 attended this year’s Christmas Lecture and workshops and were hopefully  inspired in the same way!

Sumdog – Renfrewshire Contest

Very well done to the 60 S1 participants in Park Mains High School’s first try of this online Maths and Numeracy resource.  Over the course of a week the pupils managed to answer over 25 000 questions!  Many great individual efforts saw some pupils answer over 1000 questions and as mainly time outwith school was used it is indeed an impressive effort!  Both classes involved finished in the top 10 in Renfrewshire with four of our pupils finishing in the top 50 out of over 1000 pupils participating.  Special congratulations in particular to John Davies who finished an incredible 14th overall and was our ‘Best in School’!

Thank you to Mr Campbell and all pupils who participated.
