Head Teacher’s blog – Charity events

Everyone associated with our school will be aware of the good work our pupils do for charity.  Over the last couple of weeks the S6 Charities Committee organised  a series of events to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Charity and also Children in Need riaising over £900 in total.  There were bake sales for both charities and on Children in Need day there was face painting too.  On Friday 23rd November there was a final Children in Need event with a staff Family Fortunes event at lunchtime.  The two “families” were Social Subjects/RPMS and Science.  The photos below explain the outcome!

Head Teacher’s blog – Duke of Edinburgh awards evening

In PMHS we have a long tradition of large numbers of pupils taking part in the D of E award.  On the evening of Thursday 19th November we held an awards ceremony for pupils who to date this session have successfully completed their Bronze or Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards.  The D of E Young Leaders had responsibility for organising the event which was enjoyed by parents, staff and pupils.  During the evening there were a few speeches which included hearing about some of the pupils’ experiences while working towards their awards.

Undertaking the D of E award at any level requires pupils to challenge themselves in a number of areas and without doubt they all learn a lot and benefit from their experiences.  This session, as ever our Bronze (S3) intake was oversubscribed but there is an opportunity for pupils who were not able to be part of this group to undertake the award with Community Learning staff linked with the school.  If you or your child is interested in this option please see Mrs Nicholls (DHT for S3) for more information.

Head Teacher’s Blog – Staffing updates

Interviews were held on 13.11.15 for two key posts within the school.

Our Education Support Manager post will now be filled on a permanent basis by Mrs Taylor who has been in this post on an acting basis for over three years following the secondment of the previous post holder, Mr Gray.  I am delighted that Mrs Taylor will now be a permanent member of our Senior Management Team.

Following the retiral of Mrs McMenamin last session, Mrs Fischer Keogh has been Acting Principal Teacher of Support for Learning.  I am pleased to report that Mrs Fischer Keogh was successful at interview and will now be permanent in this post.

This week I also held interviews for a Project Leader Behaviour Support post.  The successful candidate was Miss Leslie of the Geography Department.  I have created this temporary post to support some of our young people who present more challenging behaviour.  Miss Leslie will develop our existing Support Base and will work closely with staff, pupils and parents on behaviour management strategies.

On Monday 23.11.15 Mr Huggins will join our Physics Department.  I am delighted to welcome Mr Huggins to our school.

I wish all the above staff well in their new posts.

Head Teacher’s Blog – S4 prelim examinations

S4 pupils, who are currently being presented for N5 qualifications, will be sitting their prelims during weeks beginning 23rd and 30th November. All pupils have by now received their timetables which gives them the dates, times and room arrangements for all exams. Mrs Crean (S4 DHT) held an assembly last week to inform pupils of procedures for the prelim exams. In brief, pupils are expected to be on time for exams and prepared with any required materials. Mrs Crean also clearly outlined our expectations regarding conduct during the examinations.  These exams are excellent preparation for the full SQA diet as they are run in exactly the same way with the same rooms and arrangements , invigilators and procedures.  Please see the photograph below which shows how the assembly hall is set up during examinations.

Head Teacher’s Blog – Remembrance Day

On Wednesday 11th November we held our annual remembrance service in the school assembly hall.  Mrs Crean led the service and there were contributions from various pupils who sang, read poetry or played musical items.  As ever this was very well attended by staff and pupils who took time to reflect on those who gave their lives serving their country.

Head Teacher’s Blog – Staffing updates

As I intimated in an earlier blog, Mr Young retired from the Mathematics department and the Senior Management Team on Friday 23rd October.  Interviews were held last Friday for a replacement Depute Head Teacher and I am delighted to report that Mrs Nicholls was appointed to this role.  Mrs Nicholls’ substantive post was Principal Teacher of Physical Education in PMHS but since November 2013 she has been Acting Depute Head Teacher following my and then Mr Dewar’s secondment.  As Mr Dewar’s secondment is likely to continue until March 2016 we have now appointed Mrs Crean as Acting Depute Head Teacher.  Mrs Crean’s substantive post is Faculty Head Social Subjects/RMPS so this post is being filled by Mrs Ramsay and Mrs Hume on a job share basis.

This week I was pleased to welcome Mrs Graham to our English department as a permanent member of staff.

I wish all these members of staff good luck in their new roles.

Head Teacher’s Blog – Beatson visit

There is a long tradition in PMHS of pupils donating to charity.  Every year our S6 pupils form a Charities Committee which is overseen by Miss Carr.  The committee meets and decides to which charities they will donate at the end of the session.  There is a long tradition of PMHS donating to the Beatson Pebble Appeal.  On Monday 26th October, two members of the Leadership Team, Alana Steel and Andrew Young (see picture) accompanied by Miss Carr and Mrs Nicholls made a visit to The Beatson for a presentation evening where information was given on how charity monies are spent.  It was a very informative evening and PMHS’s ongoing support of the Beatson was recognised by an eminent professor who showed our visitors the golden brick with PMHS’s name on it.   I am always very proud of the charity work our school does and it was especially nice for our pupils to have a sense of how the money raised is spent and to have their efforts recognised.

Head Teacher’s Blog – Foodbank collection

A big thanks to all staff, pupils  and their families for their contributions to our foodbank collection.  Our S6 Leadership Team organised the collection and set a target of 2000 food items.  If it  was reached pupils were to be given an ‘own clothes’ day today.  The target was met and the food has been handed over to the Trussle Trust.  It is a sad reflection of our times that we have so many foodbanks but I am proud of our pupils’ efforts this week in supporting this venture.

Mr Jim Young (Depute Head Teacher)  retired from PMHS today.  Mr Young has been a key member of the Mathematics Department and also the Senior Management Team in the school for 18 years and he will be greatly missed.  Over the years M Young has had responsibility for many yeargroups and was the DHT or S5/6 for a long time.   He will be remembered by staff and pupils for his great sense of humour, caring attitude and high expectations for his pupils.  Some of you may even have had the pleasure of seeing Mr Young perform in school shows such as “Grease” where he sang “Beauty School Drop Out” or joined S6 pupils in a dance routine in their talent show.
